When to take your Engagement Photos
As a San Antonio Wedding Photographer, photographing 60+ weddings since I began photographing weddings in 2020. One of the most common questions I get as a wedding and engagement photographer is:
“When should we take our engagement photos?”
While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, the best time to schedule your engagement session depends on your wedding timeline, personal style, and—something many couples overlook—your wedding color palette.
Here’s a seasonal guide to help you choose the perfect time for your engagement session, especially if you're dreaming of photos that align with your wedding aesthetic.

🌸 Spring Engagement Sessions
Best for couples using: Pastels, light blues, blush, soft lavender, fresh greens
Spring in the Texas Hill Country is pure magic. Wildflowers bloom, the temperatures are pleasant, and the soft light pairs perfectly with romantic, airy color palettes. If your wedding includes lots of fresh floral tones or you’re leaning into garden or cottagecore vibes, this season is made for you.
Timing Tip:
Plan for March through early May, and schedule your session around golden hour when everything looks lush and warm.
☀️ Summer
Engagement Sessions
Best for couples using: Bright pinks, corals, yellows, vibrant greens, or tropical tones
Summer sessions feel bold, fun, and adventurous—perfect if your wedding is bursting with color. Think sun-drenched fields, riverside views, or golden hills. If you're dreaming of a playful shoot, maybe barefoot in the grass or by a creek in Concan or Fredericksburg, this is your season.
Timing Tip:
Aim for early morning or golden hour in June through early August to avoid the heat and harsh light. Summer sunsets are worth it.

🍂 Fall Engagement Sessions
Best for couples using: Earth tones, burnt orange, rust, emerald, mustard, wine
Fall is a favorite for a reason. The tones of the season pair beautifully with rich, moody wedding palettes, and the changing leaves add a stunning backdrop. If you're planning a rustic, elegant, or boho-inspired wedding, fall engagement photos help tell that story visually.
Timing Tip:
Schedule your session between late September and early November for peak color and cooler temperatures.
❄️ Winter Engagement Sessions
Best for couples using: Neutrals, deep reds, forest green, black and white, icy blue
While Texas doesn’t often give us snow, winter sessions still have their charm—bare trees, soft light, cozy outfits, and that quiet, romantic atmosphere. If your wedding colors include winter whites or darker tones, this season can create elegant and timeless engagement portraits.
Timing Tip:
Plan for December through early February and lean into soft textures, layered outfits, and dreamy indoor or rustic outdoor settings.

Engagement Session Timing: How Far in Advance?
I recommend scheduling your engagement session 6–9 months before your wedding to give you time for save-the-dates, guest books, and printing your favorite images.
Need them sooner? No worries—I can work with tighter timelines, especially if you already know your dream location and vibe.
Final Tip: Let Your Wedding Aesthetic Guide You
If you're unsure which season to choose, let your wedding color palette or theme guide you. Your engagement photos are a great way to start telling the visual story of your day. Bonus: your photos will naturally complement your save-the-dates and invitations if they match your overall vibe.
